Simplifying our clothes is not always easy, but it doesn’t have to be complicated if we understand WHY we are doing it, and HOW to go about it!!
So today we’ll share our favorite tip for decluttering your clothes quickly and easily with ONE question.
WHY should I declutter my clothes?
The first thing we need to figure out is WHY we want to declutter our clothes. As I’ve simplified the wardrobe of my whole family, we have all benefited in so many ways!
- Our house stays so much cleaner.
- Doing laundry is a breeze!
- Getting dressed in the morning is so easy.

The number one question we need to ask ourselves is: DOES IT FIT?
So often we hang on to clothes that just don’t fit. Either we hope that they’ll fit someday again when we lose a few pounds, or maybe they didn’t even fit when we bought them!
It can be tempting to buy clothes on sale or on clearance even if they don’t fit quite right or need alterations, just because it’s a good deal.
Don’t use your closet as a storage unit
When we shop impulsively, it just turns our closet into a storage unit, and it doesn’t actually give us good choices of things to wear that we can feel good in.
Having a closet that’s stuffed with clothes that don’t fit…
- Creates unnecessary stress!
- Can make me feel badly about myself. Always looking at clothes I used to be able to wear that no longer fit does not give me a good start to my day.
- Makes me feel bad about wasting money on things I haven’t worn.
- Makes me feel like a slob or an unorganized person.
It’s SO FREEING to clear everything out of the closet that doesn’t fit and ONLY keep the things that do!
What if it fits and I still don’t wear it?
If it fits BUT I haven’t worn it in the last 6-12 months, then I have to ask myself WHY?
- Is it unflattering?
- Is it uncomfortable?
- Is it too dressy?
- Do I even like it?
What’s going to change in the next year that will cause me to suddenly start wearing it? Even if it’s a perfectly good top and it fits, if I’m not wearing it at least once a month, it doesn’t deserve a spot in my closet.
The BEST TECHNIQUE to declutter your clothes
Pull out ALL your clothes from the drawers and closet and put them on your bed (that way you can’t go to bed until every item is dealt with and it’s motivation to get it done!!).
It can be a bit horrifying to see how much clothing we actually have when we see it all at once! But we’re creatures of habit and tend to wear only a few of the same things day after day, so a lot of it never even gets worn.
Instead of making decisions about each item, which can be exhausting, pull out the things that fit you well right now and that you know you like to wear.
Then put the rest in storage and see if you miss any of it. After a few months, get rid of whatever you haven’t gone back for. Trust me, you’re not going to need it in the future!
Can minimalists still go shopping?
I don’t know about you, but I still like to stay somewhat current and buy new clothes once in awhile. And that is totally okay!! Set yourself up for success by keeping a few things in mind:
Only keep items that you ENJOY wearing and that FIT WELL.
If you go to the extreme with decluttering your clothing, you’ll have a clear idea of where the gaps are in your wardrobe. It’s really hard to tell what you need if your drawers and closets are full, and you don’t even know what you have!
Be INTENTIONAL when you shop.
You don’t have to spend a lot of money to find clothes that fit well and that you feel good in, but when you are intentional about the new clothing you bringing in, you can choose to invest in quality items.
DON’T buy something just because it’s cheap or on sale.
You’re still going to be able to find good deals when you go shopping for specific items and you will enjoy adding your new simplified wardrobe moving forward.
