Staircase & Office Remodel: Before & Afters and Budget Breakdown of the DIY Makeover

It’s always fun to compare the before and after pictures of a remodeling project once it’s done! (Especially when it’s a DIY project over 6 months in the making!! ;)

Today we’ll break down the budget for our staircase remodeling project, paint colors and the sources of everything in it!

But first, let’s look back at what this space looked like when we moved in 4 years ago:

Flashback to 2014:

and now…

Budget Breakdown for the Makeover:

Our hope was to do this whole project on a shoestring budget. We wanted to make the entire space more functional (and attractive) without breaking the bank. Here is what we spent:
Trim ……………………………………………………… $175
Stair Treads & Stringers ………………………….. $260
Electrical ……………………………………………….. $125
Sheet Rock, Tape & Mud …………………………. $300
Insulation ………………………………………………. $200
Tongue & Groove wall planking ………………..  $360
Bookcase Building Materials ……………………  $150
Wall, Trim & Ceiling Paint ………………………..  $100
Enamel Cabinet Paint (Hirschfield’s) ……….. $34
Cabinets (Hampton Bay Unfinished from Home Depot) (Qty 3 x $80) … $240
Butcher Block Counter (Building Material Outlet, “work bench material”) … $250
Light Fixtures (Pottery Barn McCarthy Glass Wide Pendant) (Qty 2 x $80) … $160
Stenciling Materials ……………………………… $46
TOTAL COST ……………………………………… $2,400

What we already had:

Black Metal Sliding Door Track (from Amazon)
Metal Bar Stools (24″ from Amazon — LOVE these!)
Ikea Desk Drawers (Alex Drawer Unit)
Ikea Desk Tops (Linnmon Table Top
Desk Stools (Marius Stool, Black)
Vinyl Plank Flooring (Shaw brand from Menards)
Wood Pencil Holder (Marshall’s — I think it’s actually for candles!)

Tom also built this bookcase for me. We made it free-standing so that if we want to take it out the trim and wall planking won’t be interrupted. I honestly don’t have enough books to hardly fill it up, but as we transition to homeschooling this fall, I know that will change!!

PAINT COLORS:

I definitely don’t consider myself and expert when it comes to selecting paint colors, it usually comes down to A LOT of trial and error. But with much testing under our belt now, these are our go-to colors for our main level:
Blue Cabinets: Fiji by Benjamin Moore
Wall Color (behind the stenciling and on the rest of our main level): Locally Sown by Magnolia Homes
White Trim Color, also on the planked walls & sliding door: Simply White Benjamin Moore (it’s a nice warm white that I really like!)

DIY Stenciled Wallpaper

I knew I wanted to add some kind of visual interest to a couple of the walls. I love that Wallpaper is coming back in style but couldn’t really find one that I loved. Then when I did find one that I liked and ordered it… it never showed up!

It must have been a sign because the stenciling turned out WAY better. I love the nostalgic feel of it! You can see a more detailed look at how I did it in this video!

DIY Plaster Artwork

I took a stab at another DIY in this remodel with some plaster artwork. I wanted to find something that was decent in siz…and CHEAP!

So I grabbed a scrap piece of plywood, spread some plaster on it, let it dry and then started painting. I tried to keep a good amount of white in it and used the stenciling paints to tie it all together!

I’m pretty happy with how it turned out!

At many points during this project we felt defeated and overwhelmed, it felt like it would NEVER get done! Thank you for supporting and encouraging us along the way…your kind words and funny comments mean more than you’ll ever know!!
